Whereas, around the world, people regard the United States as a "safe haven" for personal freedom; and ,.. Whereas, the Continental Congress of 1776 called for the first national day of fasting and prayer, and President Abraham Lincoln issued a formal proclamation, passed by an Act of Congress on October 3, 1863, initiating the first annual National Day of Thanksgiving for the. many blessings bestowed on our nation by Almighty God; and Whereas, the annual National Day of Prayer was formally recognizing to be the . fi~t Thursday'of eVery May by a joint session of Congress in 1952; and Whereas, Americans across our country gather on this day to express together their gratitude for the rights, freedom and bountiful blessings they enjoy as expressed by President John F. Kennedy, who stated that'lthe rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from the hands of God"; and Whereas, the year's theme, "One Nation Under God", encourages us to not turn from the pattie our country faces spiritually, bl,lt continue on a valiant soldiers in the army of the living God,.committed to peace and justice for all; and . . Whereas, throughout the County of Monroe, the State of Florida and the United States of American citizens on May 3rd, will join togetherin prayers ofthanksgivingand . petition for peace and justice in our lives, . .
