A RESOLUTION URGING THAT THE STATE OF FLORIDA
NOT SEEK ANY FINANCIAL RECOVERY FROM INNOCENT
PROPERTY OWNERS ON FLAMINGO ISLAND.

WHEREAS, since the late 1950' s numerous persons purchased
lots on Flamingo Island in Monroe County, Florida, without any
knowledge of possible State claims to their land and without any
reasonable way of ascertaining the existence of such claims;
WHEREAS, many residences were built on such land at great
expense to the owners because of what the owners reasonably
believed was good title;
~lHEREAS, after the passage of so many years and the
expenditure of so much money, it would be inequitable and unjust
in the extreme for the State of Florida to seek financial relief
from the present Flamingo Island property owners on the basis of
an ancient claim of sovereign lands; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA:
Section 1.
The State of Florida is hereby urged and
requested to forgo any attempt to seek financial recovery from
the innocent property owners of Flamingo Island on the basis that
their expensive and hard earned properties really belong to the
State.
Section 2. The Clerk of the Board is hereby requested to
mail a certified copy of this Resolution to: the Honorable Bob
Martinez, Governor, the Honorable Robert A. Butterworth, Attorney
General, the Honorable Doyle Connor, Commissioner of Agriculture,
the Honorable Jim Smith, Secretary of State, the Honorable Gerald
A. Lewis, State Comptroller, the Honorable Tom Gallagher, State
Treasurer and Insurance Commissioner, the Honorable Betty Castor,
Commissioner of Education, the Honoable Larry Plummer, Senator,
the Honorable Ron Saunders, Representative and the Honorable Tom
Gardner, Executive Director, Department of Natural Resources,
3900 Commonwealth Boulevard, Tallahassee, Florida 32399.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of the Board held on
