PROPOSAL FOR
STOCK ISLAND FIRE STATION AND EMS FACILITY
Introduction
This proposal is respectfully submitted for your consideration when choosing the
new site of the Stock Island Fire Station and EMS facility. The site and building
we are proposing for the Stock Island fire station and EMS facility is located on
6811 Shrimp Road in Stock Island.
Advantages of Shrimp Road Site vs. Other Proposed Sites
We believe the Shrimp Road site is advantageous for the county for economic
reasons and will benefit the tax payers because:
•
Afire station on this site is likely to come in $600,000 under budget.
The price of the property being $2,300,000 and, according to Jerry
Barnett, the build out would cost $1,000,000, totaling $3,300,000 out of a
$3,900,000 budget.
• The cost of this project will be approximately $500,000 to $700,000 less
than the other proposed sites. The other sites are likely to use the entire
budget.
• This building has approximately 5000 sq. ft more space then needed for
the fire station. The extra space can be used for either county file storage,
Public Works Facility or County Offices.
• If the file storage is moved to Stock Island the county would be able to
move currently rented offices that are in downtown Key West into the
County owned building located on Whitehead St. This could save
$200,000 a year in rent.
• The properties considered on and near US1 are prime commercial real
estate with much higher tax income potential for the county than the
Shrimp Road property. If it becomes county property it will be taken off
the tax roll.
• Other proposed sites require $200,000 to $300,000 of rill to raise the
terrain to 9 feet above sea level.
• The Shrimp Road location is more centrally located and provides shorter
response time for the majority of the Stock Island population and
likewise for the businesses which are on the south side of US1.
• The most likely residences to catch fire are located on the south side of
US1 and close to this site. Most of the fires in the last 15 years have
been on the south side of US1 and many have been boats in the
surrounding marinas.
• Quick access to US1 (see attached map): only 1 left turn and 1 right
turn (please see aerial photo).
• The furthest away house on Key Haven is exactly 2.5 miles form this
site (1/2 the of the recommended 5 mile response radius)
