A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA TO
ADD A SUPPLEMENTAL NAME TO OCEAN BAY DRIVE
(BAYSIDE), KEY LARGO, MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA
TO BE KNOWN AS `PREP. KEN SORENSEN DRIVE" IN
HONOR OF FORMER STATE REPRESENTATIVE KEN
SORENSEN IN RECOGNITION OF HIS MANY YEARS OF
DEDICATED PUBLIC SERVICE TO THE FLORIDA KEYS
AND SOUTH FLORIDA.
WHEREAS, in the late 1960's, Kenneth Paul Sorensen moved his family from Coral
Gables to Key Largo, Florida where he became involved in local government and civic
organizations and where he resided until his passing on July 6, 2012; and
WHEREAS, in 1980, Mr. Sorensen was elected to the Monroe County Commission
where he served until 1984, serving one term as Mayor /Chairman from 1983 to 1984; and
WHEREAS, in 1998, Mr. Sorensen was elected to represent Monroe County in the
Florida House of Representatives, District 120, where he served the maximum of four (4) terms
until 2006; and
WHEREAS, following his retirement from the House of Representatives, Rep. Sorensen
became senior advisor to State Representative and House Speaker Marco Rubio in 2006 and was
an advisor on U. S. Senator Rubio's 2010 Senate campaign; and
WHEREAS, Rep. Sorensen was also a longtime business owner in the Upper Keys
where he operated the Key Largo Shopper; and
WHEREAS, Rep. Sorensen was also an accomplished sailor and sailboat racer who won
numerous yachting trophies; earned a U. S. Coast Guard Master's license; set a class speed
record on his sloop "Detente" capturing first place in the MORC Fort Lauderdale to Key West
race in 1984; and logged multiple first -place finishes in the Upper Keys Sailing Club's Glander
Cup, the Abacos regatta, and numerous other sailing competitions; and
WHEREAS, Rep. Sorensen was one of the founders of the Upper Keys Sailing Club,
where he served as Commodore and, upon the untimely passing of his son Mark, in 2006
endowed the Mark Sorensen Youth Sailing Program in his son's honor, a non -profit organization
dedicated to the promotion and development of youth sailing regardless of their ability to pay;
and
WHEREAS, Rep. Sorensen passed away on July 6, 2012; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of Rep. Sorenson's contributions to the Florida Keys and
Monroe County as well as his love of sailing, the Board desires to add an honorary supplemental
name to Ocean Bay Drive (Bayside), Key Largo, Florida, which leads to the Upper Keys Sailing
Club, in honor of Rep. Sorensen;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida, that:
1. A supplemental name shall be added to the official street name signage
currently posted at Ocean Bay Drive (Bayside), Key Largo, Florida to read
"Rep. Ken Sorensen Drive ".
2. As a supplemental name to the established official street name, area
mapping or post office revisions are not required.
3. Monroe County Public Works staff is hereby directed to place the
supplemental name signage reading "Rep. Ken Sorensen Drive" to the
current official street name signage at Ocean Bay Drive (Bayside).
4. The Clerk of the Court is hereby directed to forward a certified copy of
this resolution to Representative Holly Raschein, Suite 10, 99198
Overseas Highway, Key Largo, FL 33037 -2437 for personal delivery to
the family of late Representative Ken Sorensen and to Postmaster
Vincent Recupero, U. S. Postal Service, 100100 Overseas Highway, Key
Largo, FL 33037.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners by
the said board at a meeting held on the W of February, 2015.
