RESOLUTION NO. 176 - 2017
A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA
NAMING THE JURY ASSEMBLY ROOM LOCATED AT
THE FREEMAN JUSTICE CENTER, 302 FLEMING
STREET, KEY WEST, FLORIDA AS THE "JUDGE WAYNE
MILLER JURYASSEMBLYROOM".
WHEREAS, the Honorable Wayne Miller was first elected to a seat on the Monroe
County Court on November 8, 1988 and re- elected in 1992, 1996, 2000, 2006 and 2012 without
opposition; and
WHEREAS, Judge Miller has presided over thousands of cases in the County Court, and
in the Circuit Court as an acting Circuit Judge, of the 16 Judicial Circuit of Monroe County,
Florida; and
WHEREAS, Judge Miller has maintained a distinguished record of judicial integrity,
character, and service to Monroe County by participating on local boards and civic organizations
including volunteering as an assistant football coach with Key West High School; and
WHEREAS, Judge Miller's reputation for excellence has been recognized throughout
the State of Florida through his appointments to serve as the Dean of the Florida Judicial
College, which provides education for all newly elected or appointed Florida Judges, as well as
his nine year appointment to the Florida Supreme Court's Trial Court Budget Commission,
which is responsible for allocating funding to Florida's twenty judicial circuits; and
WHEREAS, Judge Miller has presided over hundreds of jury qualifications in Monroe
County, advising potential jurors that courts depend on citizens to serve as jurors and that service
as a juror is indispensable to maintaining the integrity and efficiency of the judicial system; and
WHEREAS, during jury qualification, Judge Miller is well known for reminding
prospective jurors that the right to a trial by jury is one of the core values of American
citizenship and the obligation and privilege to serve as a juror is fundamental to our democracy;
and
WHEREAS, during qualification, Judge Miller would encourage citizens summonsed for
jury service to serve on juries as a way of honoring the memory and sacrifice of the thousands of
young American troops who died on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944, during World
War II, as part of the Allied campaign to liberate Europe and free the world from tyranny; and
WHEREAS, Judge Miller is retiring on August 31, 2017 after nearly thirty (30) years of
distinguished service to the people of Monroe County;

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNTY BOARD OF
COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The Jury Assembly Room located at the Freeman Justice Center, 302
Fleming Street, Key West, Florida shall henceforth be known as the
"Judge Wayne Miller Jury Assembly Room ".
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County,
Florida at a regular meeting held on the 16'' day of August, 2017.
