Discussion and direction on converting 1 or 2 existing holidays
(e.g. Good Friday, Columbus Day and President's Day) to floating vacation days.
ITEM BACKGROUND:
Providing floating holidays would acknowledge employee diversity, support a strong work-life
balance and enhance the employee benefit package, with minimal (if any) additional cost to the
County.
The typical and current County paid holiday schedule includes civic, religious and traditional days
that
paid holidays of other government entities. A paid floating holiday, or two, in lieu of some of the
, would allow employees to take paid time off when their various
religious and cultural celebrations Floating holidays
also offer employees the option for days off for birthdays, parent-teacher days, extended holiday
weekends, etc.
Offering employees floating holidays allows the County to remain open for public business an
additional 1-2 days per year.
A policy would need to be designed relative to how the day may be scheduled and approved by
supervisors.
