AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Approval of a resolution recommending and endorsing former
Commissioner George Neugent for appointment by the Governor to the Governing Board of the
South Florida Water Management District.
ITEM BACKGROUND:
The South Florida Water Management District is a regional governmental agency that manages the
water resources in the southern half of the state, covering 16 counties from Orlando to the Florida
Keys and serving a population of 8.1 million residents.
Monroe County is one of the sixteen counties within the jurisdiction of the South Florida Water
Management District along with Broward, Collier, Glades, Hendry, Lee, Martin, Miami-Dade, Palm
Beach and St. Lucie counties as well as portions of Charlotte, Highlands, Okeechobee, Orange
Osceola and Polk counties.
There are nine positions on the Governing Board South Florida Water Management District.
Appointments to the Governing Board are made by the Governor of the State of Florida, and subject
to confirmation by the State Senate.
Florida statute specifies that two members of the SFWMD Governing Board, appointed at large,
shall reside in an area consisting of St. Lucie, Martin, Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and
Monroe Counties.

Former Monroe County Commissioner George Neugent, a resident of Monroe County, has extensive
public sector policy experience, environmental/water quality expertise, and proven record of
accomplishment in public service, collaboration, partnership and consensus building, serving roles as
both an elected official and appointee on local, regional, and state-wide boards and councils.
