S. Department of Labor; and WHEREAS, individuals aged fifty-five and over are a major national resource, constitute a substantial population of the United States at the present time, and will constitute a larger percentage of the population in future decades; and WHEREAS, such individuals 'who have made continuing contributions to the national welfare should be encouraged to remain in or resume career and voluntary roles that utilae their skills, strengths and wisdom; and WHEREAS, career opportunities reafflfm the dignity, self-worth and independence of older individuals by encouraging them to make decisions and 10 act upon those decisions, by tapping their resources, experience and knOWledge, and by enabling them to contribute to society; and WHEREAS, the operating Tille V of the Older Americans Act of 1965 has demonstrated that older wor1<ers are extremely capable in a wide variety of job roles; and WHEREAS, while age discrimination still exists, more and more employers are recognizing the value of older workers, their action is to be commended; and WHEREAS, The Federal govemment has initiated efforts to hasten elimination of an unrealistic bias against older workers and to point out the many contributions of the older worker to our national well-being; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED That the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners urge all emplo,ers of this area to give speciaJ consideration 10 the skills and qualifications of these men and women fifty-five and older. We, the Commissioners of the County of Monroe County encourage those public officials who are responsible for job placement, counseling, timing and retraining services to intensify, throughout this month and throughout the entire year their efforts to assist older workers find suitable jobs and training opportunities. This is a community wide effort that should engage the active support of our institutions. NOW, THEREFORE, by virtue of the power vested in me as Mayor of Monroe County, Florida, I, CHARLES 'SONNY' MCCOY, do proclaim the month of May, 2002 as OLDER AMERICANS MONTH in Monroe County arid encourage the continued cooperation of all govemment and private'run. groups 10 support the Older Americans Act of 1965.
