AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Report on bicycle trails designated as the Florida Keys
Overseas Heritage Trail being maintained by the County on behalf of the Florida
Department of Environmental Protection.
ITEM BACKGROUND: On August 9, 2001, the Florida Department of Transportation
(DOT) and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) entered into a
Memorandum of Agreement to assign maintenance responsibilities of existing trails
(shown in attachment "A") to DEP. In order to provide continued use and enjoyment to
the public, the County continues to maintain the trails until such time as DEP can
assume this responsibility. The DEP has issued a Purchase Order to the County and
has paid the County $10,857,62 to date covering maintenance performed from 8/9/01
through 2/1102.
