WHEREAS. HELPLINE is MorIroe County's only 24 hour suicide holline that is there when people are in
need; and
WHEREAS, last year HELPUNE had 38 suicide related calls; and
WHEREAS, suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among 15 to 24-year-olds; and
WHEREAS, TEENLINE crisis line gives local youth who are feeling depressed or suicidal someone to talk
to; and
WHEREAS, the eklet1y make up 12% of the population but committed 1 B. 7% of all suicides; and
WHEREAS, HELPLINE makes daily reassurance calls to 70 senior citizens throughout the Keys, giving
many their only contact to the outside world; and
WHEREAS. HELPLINE'. Family Caregiver Program oITers practical advice for those caring for a loved one
who is elderly or homebound; and
WHEREAS, HELPLINE has been seMng Monroe County for 20 years, is a member of the American
Association of Suicidology; and
WHEREAS, HELPLINE'. commitment to suicide prevention remains ~ir top priorily;anct
WHEREAS, this year HELPLINE honors the national theme: Oppotfunities and ChaHenges along the
continuum of health and illn86S; recognizing the suicida risk among DavelopmentaHy Disabled.
BE IT RESOLVED. that the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners will worK within the County
system of Government to addrass the issue of suicide abuse by supporting HELPLINE.
NOW, THEREFORE, by virtue of the power vested in me as Mayor of Monroe County, Florida, I, CHARLES
'SONNY' MCCOY, do proclaim the week of May 5-11. 2002 as
SUICIDE PREVENTION WEEK
and call upon all citizens, community agencies, religious organizations, medical facilities. and businesses to
increase their participation in our eITorts to prevent suicide thereby strengthening the communities in which we live.
