AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Presentation by the Director of Joint Interagency Task Force South
(JIATFS) Rear Admiral Doug Fears.
ITEM BACKGROUND: Rear Admiral Douglas Fears, U.S.C.G. will give a brief overview of
Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATF-S), its relationship with the community in Monroe
County. The briefing will cover the decision for JIAFS to remain in Key West and a proposed new
facility onboard NAS Key West's Truman Annex.
JIATFS is a joint Department of Defense (DOD) command located at Truman Annex. JIATFS
consists of almost 600 personnel, liaison officers, and contract employees living in Monroe County.
Its mission is to detect and monitor illicit trafficking, mostly cocaine, that travels in multi-ton
shipments from South America towards the U.S. and other locations.
Following a 2019 survey of possible locations, the decision was made for JIATFS to remain in Key
West. This decision received strong bipartisan advocacy from the Florida delegation.
