This is a yearly proclamation requested by Wesley House
Family Services. The proclamation will be accepted by both
Joseph Barker, Executive Director, and Rose Stayduhar, Director,
Foster-Adoptive Services from Wesley House Family Services.

WHEREAS, we know that our children are our most valuable asset; and
WHEREAS, we know that child abuse hurts and that no child is to blame for the abuse;
and
WHEREAS, child abuse is a national tragedy, taking the lives of children every day
and affecting millions of children and families every year; and
WHEREAS, the impact of abuse is greater than its immediate, visible effects and
survivors of child abuse and neglect may be at greater risk for problems later in life that
affect not just the child and family, but society as a whole; and
WHEREAS, child abuse is therefore a community problem and preventing child abuse
depends on the involvement of all people through Monroe County; and
WHEREAS, the key to preventing child abuse and neglect is community support of
parents and families so that children can be raised in healthy, competent, productive,
caring and nurturing homes; and
WHEREAS, effective child abuse prevention programs succeed because of partnerships
created among social service agencies, schools, religious and civic organizations, law
enforcement and the business community.
NOW THEREFORE, by the virtue of the power vested in me as Mayor of Monroe
County, Florida, I, Murray E:Nelson, do hereby proclaim the month of April, 2004 as
CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH
and I call upon all citizens, community agencies, religious organizations, and businesses
to increase their participation in our efforts to prevent child abuse, thereby
strengthening the community in which we live.
