AGENDA ITEM WORDING:
A Presentation in recognition of the untiring and successful efforts of Gerald M. Nixon in naming the
keys offofCudjoe Key. It is because of Mr. Nixon's perseverance and vision that we add the Venture
Out Keys, made up ofthe Venture Key and the Out Key to the United States official geographic names
repository. It was Mr. Nixon's intent to name these Keys, making it easier for vessels to navigate our
waters and reduce the possibility of damage to the coral.

Dear Ms. Spehar:
This is to inform you that the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, at its February 12, 2004, meeting,
approved the proposals to make official three unnamed islands located in Monroe County, Out
Kev, Venture Kev, and Venture Out Keys. These decisions were made in agreement with the
findings and recommendations of your office, as well as the Florida Board on Geographic Names.
The new names will be published in the Board's Decision List 2004, The new names have also
been entered into the Nation's official geographic names repository, which is available and
searchable online at http://geonames.usgs.gov. The entries read as follows:
Out Key: island; 3 acres; located just off the SE end of Cudjoe Key, 1.3 km (0.8 mi) E of Gopher
Key, 32 km (20 mi) ENE of Key West; named for a nearby condominium community; Monroe
County, Florida; 24038'29"N, 81 o28'15"W; USGS map - Summerland Key 1:24,000.
Venture Key: island; 5 acres; located just off the Send ofCudjoe Key, 2.4 km (1.5 mi) W of the
Send ofSummerland Key, 32 km (20 mi) ENE of Key West; named for a nearby condominium
community; Monroe County, Florida; 24038'44"N, 81028'02"W; USGS map - Summerland Key

make official the names Out Key and Venture Key for two unnamed islands in Momoe County,
and to make official the name Venture Out Kevs to be applied collectively to both islands. These
decisions were made in agreement with the findings and recommendations of your office, as well
