Item D28 BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY Meeting Date: May 18. 2005 Division: Community Services Bulk: Item: Yes l No Department: Commtu;litx Servic~s Staff Contact Person: Debbie Fre<!erick ., AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Approval of a Resolution urging the South Florida Workforce not to close any of the three One-Stop Career'Centers or reduce funding in Monroe COWlty due to the distance and hardship created to Monroe CoWlty'S citizens who rely on them to food work. ITEM BACKGROUND: The three Monroe County One-Stops have gone from a recent funding high oUl.2 M to a projected budget of $585 K for PY 2oosiz006 in the last few years. While it is recognized that the Federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA) State funding continues to be cut yearly, Monroe County should not be subjected to disproportionate One-Stop funding cuts and closures. Decisions have been made very recently by the Miaini Workforce Region Staff to keep Miami-Dade One-Stops open that were slated for closure due to political pressure from local governments. Monroe County has only three seats on the South Florida Workforce Board in Region 23 out of36 cummt members. This minority representation at tirn,es allows Miami-Dade Board members to dictate board policy in the favor of Miami.Dade County Workforce operationS and to the detriment of Monroe County and its citizens. This resolution will tend to level the playing field and adjust the scorecard.
