Item O07 BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY Meeting Date: December 21,2005 Division: BOCC Bulk Item: Yes No X Department: George R. Neugent Staff Contact Person: Terri Marble AGENDA ITEM WORDING: A request of support from the Board of County Commission to direct staff of the Marine Resource Dept. to research and report back to the BOCC the cost of providing canal clean-up and maintenance by county personnel or, from the private sector on an annual basis; and provide a defining definition of the scope of such service which would produce a canal management & maintenance program for un- incorporated Monroe County. ITEM BACKGROUND: It is time Monroe County recognize its obligation and responsibility to maintain (both naturally occurring and manmade) canals to protect water quality and ease of passage for resident(s) and visitor(s) of Monroe County. After Hurricane Georges and now Hurricane Wilma many canals were and have been rendered useless due to silting and laid over trees. Grant money from FEMA should be available for providing this service in post recovery; however, we should provide this service year round in light of the fact that water front properties receive a higher property valuation.
