Orlando Merced began his career with Monroe County in October of 2001 as a Firefighter/Paramedic. In July of 2007 he was promoted to his current rank of Fire Rescue Lieutenant. Lieutenant Merced has provided 10 years of valued service to Monroe County. During his tenure with the department he has received specialized training in many areas of the fire rescue field including fire apparatus operation, advanced vehicle extrication, incident command, and fire officer training. He has achieved the certification from the State of Florida for Fire Officer 1. He had completed the required air medical courses which allowed him to apply in the year 2002 for the Trauma Star Program as a Qualified Flight Medic. Lt. Merced has served with the Trauma Star Medical Helicopter Program for many years and taken an active part in maintaining his air medical training. His current assignment is at Fire Station 13 on Big Pine Key, however, he fills in at least one 24 hour shift per month on Trauma Star at the Monroe County Aviation Hangar. Lt. Merced has been involved as a Charge Paramedic in the resuscitation of several patients suffering from cardiac arrest. He has received two Phoenix Awards for these actions. Lt. Merced has been and continues to be a valuable asset to Monroe County Fire Rescue and the community he serves. We are proud to honor him with this length of service award.
