AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Discussion and direction to staff regarding canal overgrowth
through the Eden Pines Canal system that may impede safe navigation.
ITEM BACKGROUND: In October 2014 The BOCC passed a Resolution 377-2014 adopting the
procedures to be used for the abatement of overgrown canal vegetation that impede safe navigation
and overgrown dry lot vegetation that is unsafe or unsanitary. The BOCC finds overgrown canal
vegetation that impedes safe navigation on canals as defined in Monroe County Code Section
26-4(b).
The neighborhood of Eden Pines in Big Pine all traverse the waterways thru the canal system leading
to open waters. Some of the canals are becoming overgrown with vegetation impeding navigation,
which if left unattended could lead to unsafe navigation. As such, a comprehensive look at the
canals of Eden Pine may be deemed necessary. Therefore, it is requested that after this discussion,
direction is given to staff to look at all the canals in Eden Pines to identify areas that have become
overgrown.
