AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Discussion and direction for naming the proposed park in Big Pine
Key, formerly known as the Big Pine Swim Hole.
ITEM BACKGROUND: Monroe County has acquired a parcel of property in Big Pine Key that
was formerly known as the Big Pine Swim Hole. A park is being established, using TDC and FDOT
funds, with the intention of providing a scenic viewing area as well as other amenities for the use of
Monroe County residents and others in perpetuity.
Monroe County Parks and Beaches Department would like direction from the BOCC for naming of
the new park. Some ideas submitted previously are Lower Keys Scenic Viewing Area, Big Pine
Nature Preserve, Ocean Side 29 and Pine Channel Nature Park. Ideas for the name will be heardby
the Parks and Beaches Advisory Board at the April 18th meeting and a recommendation will be
presented to the BOCC during the April 20 meeting. An Ordinance will be presented to the Board
later to declare the property as a County Park and also setting forth any specific rules or other
matters related to the property.
