Whereas, suicide is the 11 leading cause of all deaths in the United States and
the annual death toll equates to the losses in some of the most deadly wars; and
th
Whereas, suicide is the 7 cause of death in Monroe County, eight times higher
than the homicide rate; and
Whereas, there have been 17 suicides in Monroe County in the first 6 months of
2009; and
Whereas, it is recognized that the devastation of suicide impacts members of this
community and is a serious health problem; and
Whereas, it is known that each life lost impacts an estimated 6 family members
and additional friends and loved ones with unimaginable sorrow and pain; and
Whereas, 80% of persons who complete suicide give some warning of their
intention; and
Whereas, drug and alcohol use are associated with the risk for suicide; and
Whereas, education and suicide prevention awareness is a key to decreasing
this tragedy, and
Whereas, simple and early efforts to increase social connectedness and
discussion with persons at risk for suicide has proven to save lives and reduce
further trauma.
Now Therefore, it be Resolved that, I, George Neugent, Mayor of Monroe County

do hereby designate September 6 through September 12 2009 as
Suicide Prevention Week
In Monroe County, Florida and affirm the commitment of the Board of County
Commissioners to help prevent suicide through education, prevention and social
connectedness and urge all citizens to reflect suicide as a public health problem
and suicide prevention as a community responsibility.
