RESOLUTION NO. 220-1987
A RESOLUTION GIVING MORAL SUPPORT TO EFFORTS
TO ESTABLISH A VOCATIONAL AND APPRENTICESHIP
FACILITY IN KEY WEST OR MONROE COUNTY;
PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, there is little or no existing facility for appren-
tice and vocational training in the City of Key West, Florida and
Monroe County, Florida, and
WHEREAS, there is a great need in the local community for
the establishment of such a facility, and
WHEREAS, the local labor market is demanding more and more
skilled workers such as carpenters, electricians, plumbers and
the like as a result of new construction and continued mainte-
nance of the new and old existing structures, and
WHEREAS, there are substantial numbers of high school
students who do not desire to complete high school for one reason
or another and who could be channeled into a vocational training
facility if such were available, and
WHEREAS, local war veterans would have excellent opportunity
to take advantage of such training instead of training in Miami
and other far away places, and
WHEREAS, the results of vocational and apprenticeship
training would be most beneficial to the economy of our local
community in providing jobs for skilled labor and in thereby
creating new sources of tax revenue for the City and the County,
and
WHEREAS, such a program would aid in decreasing idleness
among some local residents, and would thus decrease the tempta-
tion to use drugs, alcohol, and to commitment of crimes of
whatever nature, and
WHEREAS, an apprenticeship and vocational training program
would provide to the judges of our court system an effective
alternative for treating offenders, and would decrease the number
of repeat offenders, now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that full moral and leadership support is
hereby given to efforts to establish an appropriate vocational
and apprenticeship facility within the City of Key West and/or
Monroe County.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held
on the 2nd day of June, A.D. 1987.
