RESOLUTION NO. 258 -1987
A RESOLUTION APPROVING THE DESIGNATION OF
SAVE-A-TURTLE AS THE OFFICIAL SEA TURTLE
PATROL AND PRESERVATION ORGANIZATION OPERAT-
ING IN MONROE COUNTY; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE
DATE.
WHEREAS, sea turtles are protected species under Federal law
and under Florida Statutes sections 370.021 and 370.12; and
WHEREAS, Save-A-Turtle is an independent, non-profit volun-
teer organization sponsored by the Florida Park Service and the
Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission; and
WHEREAS, Save-A-Turt1e was formed in 1985 for the purpose of
assisting in efforts to preserve and maintain the several species
of sea turtles found in Monroe County; and
WHEREAS,
Save-A-Turt1e performs important services by
training volunteers; conducting beach patrols, nesting surveys,
and data collection; assisting with turtle stranding salvage
operations; and educating the public regarding sea turtle preser-
vation; and
WHEREAS, Save-A-Turt1e operates several sea turtle hatch-
eries where eggs which might not otherwise survive are cared for,
with hatchlings being released to the natural environment; and
WHEREAS, it is the intent of Monroe County to support the
activities of Save-A-Turt1e; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, as follows:
1. Save-A-Turtle is hereby designated as and proclaimed to
be the official sea turtle and preservation organization operat-
ing in Monroe County.
2. Save-A-Turt1e is hereby encouraged to use tags to mark
sea turtles for identification purposes.
3. This resolution shall go into effect immediately upon
its passage and adoption and authentication by the signatures of
the presiding officer and the Clerk of the Commission.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held
on the 7th day of July, A.D. 1987.
