AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Discussion of safety improvements on Card Sound Road.
ITEM BACKGROUND: Improving roadway shoulders can improve the safety ofa roadway. In
Miami-Dade County, Card Sound Road would need to be shifted away from the canal to create
adequate room for the shoulders. Paved shoulders with pavement markings are recommended.

I am enclosmg a copy of a letter from the Community Administrator of Ocean Reef.
Although we do not control the Dade County portion of Card sound Road they're asking for our
assistance to see if improvements can be made.
By copy of this memorandum, r shall ask the County Engineer to do Q quick review and
provide comment concerning the issues raised in the letter. At that point we shall make a report to
the County Commission.

Dear Mr. Roberts:
The Ocean Reef Community is very concerned about the safety of Card Sound
Road from County Road 905 to US1 in Dade County. Your staff has been very
responsive with maintenance on the Monroe County portion of the road and we
ask for your assistance with the Dade County portion.
The existing road is a very narrow 2 lane roadway with a guardrail and canal on
one side and power poles and trees on the other. The shoulders are not
improved and there have been numerous accidents that involved a driver leaving
the edge of the roadway, over steering and colliding with head on traffic or other
obstacles.
Due to physical restraints, we are aware that there are limited amounts of
improvements that can be made. However. if the paved portion of this road was
shifted to the north (toward the power poles) a roadbed similar to the 18-mile
stretch of US1 from Florida City to Key Largo could be created.
This would allow for wider shoulder with reflective pavement markings and wider
centerlines with pavement markings. Drivers could then make a minor mistake
without fatal consequences.
We would greatly appreciate any support that Monroe County can provide to
achieve a safer Card Sound Road in both counties. Please feel free to contact
