. Monroe County had the lowest growth rate in 10 years (1,565 or 20/0)
of all the 67 Florida Counties and possibly the nation as well.
. The White population in Monroe County went from 82 % in 1990 to
77 % in 2000. A decrease of 5 % or 3,900 White
. The Hispanic population in Monroe County went from 12 % in 1990
to 16 % in 2000. An increase of 4 % or 3,120 Hispanic
. The Black population in Monroe County remained at 5 % from 1990
to 2000. A total of 3,900 Black.
. The Other population in Monroe County increased from 1 % in 1990
to 2% in 2000. An increase of 1 % or 780 Other.
. The ability to classify people as multi-racial in Census 2000 would
account for the differences in numbers as "Others".
. Florida's 2000 Ethnic breakdown is White 65 %, Hispanic 17 %,
Black 15 % and Other 3 0;", as compared to Monroe County's 77 0;",

. Florida's population increased by 13.2 % or 3.1 million people
between 1990 and 2000
· Miami-Dade's population increased by 16.3 % to 2, 253 M, Broward
by 29.3 % to 1,623 M, and Palm Beach by 31.0 % to 1,131 M,
compared to Monroe County of 2 0/0.
· Reasons for slow growth by population in Monroe County: The
Economy, Cost of living, Affordable Housing, ROGO, Area of
Critical Concern, Keys as an increased Destination Location, Second
home buyers in the Keys increasing prices, and by natural disasters
such as Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and Hurricane Georges in 1998
removing housing opportunities and jobs.
