Whereas, the National Black History Month will be observed across
,America and abroad during February, 2001; and
Whereas, the National Theme of this year's observance is "Creating and
Defining the African-American Community: Family, Church, Politics and Culture;"
and
Whereas, this observance is a special period to recognize achievements an
contributions by African-Americans, which dates from February 1926, when it
was launched by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who was a Harvard trained scholar, an
international educator and the son of former slaves, and others. Dr. Woodson
realized early the crucial role of the African-American in the history of the United
.. States andthe World and committed his life to the research and dissemination of
this information to promote the study of African-American life and history and to
encourage racial harmony through organization and work of clubs and schools;
and
Whereas, the observance will provide an opportunity for students and the
public to study and reflect on the creation and definition of the African-American .
Community, which is visible in the belief and trust of family, the worship and
prayer of church, the understanding and use of politics and the beauty and
strength of culture.
Now, Therefore, by virtue of the power vested in me as Mayor of Monroe
County, Florida I, George R. Neugent, do hereby proclaim the Month of
February, 2001 as
National Black History Month
in Monroe County and, urge all Citizens and visitors to recognize this event and
participate. fittingly in the observance.
