"\,'';:':: ____L~~ . :", , , ~a!,or' ~h ,llroclamatton Whereas, the National Black History Month will be observed across ,America and abroad during February, 2001; and Whereas, the National Theme of this year's observance is "Creating and Defining the African-American Community: Family, Church, Politics and Culture;" and Whereas, this observance is a special period to recognize achievements an contributions by African-Americans, which dates from February 1926, when it was launched by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who was a Harvard trained scholar, an international educator and the son of former slaves, and others. Dr. Woodson realized early the crucial role of the African-American in the history of the United .. States andthe World and committed his life to the research and dissemination of this information to promote the study of African-American life and history and to encourage racial harmony through organization and work of clubs and schools; and Whereas, the observance will provide an opportunity for students and the public to study and reflect on the creation and definition of the African-American . Community, which is visible in the belief and trust of family, the worship and prayer of church, the understanding and use of politics and the beauty and strength of culture. Now, Therefore, by virtue of the power vested in me as Mayor of Monroe County, Florida I, George R. Neugent, do hereby proclaim the Month of February, 2001 as National Black History Month in Monroe County and, urge all Citizens and visitors to recognize this event and participate. fittingly in the observance.
