Resolution 181-2007 Commissioner Sonny McCoy RESOLUTION NO. 181 - 2007 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, PETITIONING THE STATE OF FLORIDA TO FLOAT A $500,000,000 BOND TO COMPLETE THE SEWERING OF THE FLORIDA KEYS IN AN EXPEDITIOUS MANNER. WHEREAS, Monroe County is an Area of Critical State Concern; and WHEREAS, the State of Florida has mandated that the Florida Keys be fully sewered by 2010 in order to protect the near-shore waters of the Keys; and WHEREAS, the Florida Keys constitute a 120-mile long archipelago with a tremendous amount of near-shore waters; and WHEREAS, the sewering of the Florida Keys is intended to protect the waters in order to preserve marine life; and WHEREAS, sewering the Florida Keys will further the interest of the health, welfare, and safety of citizens, visitors, and wildlife; and WHEREAS, Monroe County has been funding sewer projects for a number of years, with erratic funding from the State, notwithstanding the State mandate to accomplish the sewering; and WHEREAS, building the sewering projects over the timeline necessary without federal and only partial State funding, with no future State assistance secured, results in a lengthy process which incurs construction costs increasing at a rate that the County's resources will be depleted before finishing the projects throughout the County; now therefore BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS FOR MONROE COUNTY, that: Section 1. The Board of County Commissioners For Monroe County, Florida, petitions the State of Florida to float a State-backed bond issue in the amount of $500,000,000 (five hundred million dollars), in order to expeditiously complete the sewering of the Florida Keys. Res. Pet. State Bonds for Sewers Section 2. The Clerk is directed to send copies of this resolution to Governor Charles Crist, Senator Larcenia Bullard, and Representative Saunders. Section 3. This Resolution shall be effective on the day stated below.
