Resolution 396-2002 Commissioner Neugent RESOLUTION NO.. 396--2002 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA SUPPORnNG THE CONTINUED EXISTENCE OF A SUGARLOAF KEY POSTAL FACILITY WHEREAS, the United States Postal Service recently announced that the US Postal Service, effective October 18, 2002 will suspend operation of the Sugarloaf Shores facility, on the stated grounds the building does not meet the statutory requirements for a postal facility and cannot be upgraded; and WHEREAS, the Postal Service has leased and operated the Sugarloaf Shores facility since November 30, 1999; and WHEREAS, said postal facility has been operated at its present location for over 35 years, and has been assigned zip code 33044; and WHEREAS, the elimination of a postal facility in the Sugarloaf Key area would inconvenience certain residents of the Lower Keys who utilize the local postal facility for their postal needs; and WHEREAS, the owner of the building in which the Sugarloaf Shores facility is located states that he has received no request to upgrade the building; and WHEREAS, the Postal Service's announcement fails to address the availability of any potential replacement facility; and WHEREAS, the Comprehensive Plan of Monroe County mandates planning efforts to discourage unnecessary travel between the separate Keys and the continued existence of the Sugarloaf Shores facility is consistent with that policy; now, therefore BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that: Section 1. A request is hereby made to the United States Postal Service to maintain a postal facility in the Sugarloaf Key area. Section 2. The Clerk is hereby directed to send a true copy of this Resolution to Joanne Feindt, District Manager, US Postal Service, PO Box 829990, Pembrook Pines, FL 33082-9990; Tama Hamburg, Postal Manager, US Postal Service, Summerland Key, FL 33042; William J.
