RESOLUTION NO.. 396--2002
A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE
COUNTY, FLORIDA SUPPORnNG THE CONTINUED EXISTENCE OF A
SUGARLOAF KEY POSTAL FACILITY
WHEREAS, the United States Postal Service recently announced that the US Postal Service, effective
October 18, 2002 will suspend operation of the Sugarloaf Shores facility, on the stated grounds the building
does not meet the statutory requirements for a postal facility and cannot be upgraded; and
WHEREAS, the Postal Service has leased and operated the Sugarloaf Shores facility since November 30,
1999; and
WHEREAS, said postal facility has been operated at its present location for over 35 years, and has been
assigned zip code 33044; and
WHEREAS, the elimination of a postal facility in the Sugarloaf Key area would inconvenience certain
residents of the Lower Keys who utilize the local postal facility for their postal needs; and
WHEREAS, the owner of the building in which the Sugarloaf Shores facility is located states that he has
received no request to upgrade the building; and
WHEREAS, the Postal Service's announcement fails to address the availability of any potential
replacement facility; and
WHEREAS, the Comprehensive Plan of Monroe County mandates planning efforts to discourage
unnecessary travel between the separate Keys and the continued existence of the Sugarloaf Shores facility is
consistent with that policy; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that:
Section 1. A request is hereby made to the United States Postal Service to maintain a postal
facility in the Sugarloaf Key area.
