RESOLUTION NO. 39f.1 -2002
A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY IN
RECOGNITION OF THE LATE EMERY S. MAJOR
WHEREAS, Emery S. Major passed away at the age of 52 on August 18, 2002, at the Lower Keys
Medical Center; and
WHEREAS, Emery was born in Key West on October 12, 1950, the son of Charles L. Major, Sf., and
the late Mary Clara Major; and
WHEREAS, Emery attended Frederick Douglass elementary and middle school, and graduated from
Key West High School. He also attended Florida Keys Community College and was affectionately known as
the "sidewalk lawyer"; and
WHEREAS, Emery worked for former Mayors C.B. and Wilhelmina Harvey at their drug store, and
thereafter became interested in politics, attending every City Commission meeting; and
WHEREAS, Emery was elected to the Civil Service Board, Florida Keys Memorial Hospital Board,
and the Key West City Commission.
WHEREAS, Emery was a civil rights activist, former president of the NAACP, and founder and
president of Operation Justice; and
WHEREAS, Emery was a member of the Jaycees, Coral City Elks, and former advisor for the Political
Action Women's Club; and
WHEREAS, Emery Major is survived by his father, Charles L. Major, Sr., many relatives and friends;
now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE
COUNTY, FLORIDA:
Section 1: Hereby adopts this Resolution as an expression to the family of their deepest sympathy
in the passing of the late Emory S. Mayor, and in great appreciation of the service he gave to his community.
Section 2:
Forwards a copy of this Resolution to Emery's family expressing the Board's sorrow.
