RESOLUTION NO. 1110 -2007
A. RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, IN RECOGNITION OF THE
LATE ALEXANDER "SANDY" SPRUNT IV.
WHEREAS, conservationist and community leader Alexander "Sandy" Sprunt IV (hereinafter
"Sandy Sprunt") passed away on March 2, 2007 at the age of 78; and
WHEREAS, Sandy Sprunt was born in Charleston, South Carolina, earned his Bachelors
degree in Biology from Davidson College, earned his Masters degree in Wildlife Management
from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and had a 43-year career with the
National Audubon Society; and
WHEREAS, Sandy Sprunt moved to Tavernier in 1955 to work with National Audubon Research
Director Robert Porter Allen; and
WHEREAS, in 1959 Sandy Sprunt and Donna Jeanne Nelson were married; and
WHEREAS, Sandy Sprunt served as Research Director for the National Audubon Society from
1960 to the late 1980's, during which time National Audubon conducted research on a wide
variety of species of national and international concern, including wading birds, seabirds, the
bald eagle, the California condor, the white crown pigeon, and the West Indian flamingo; and
WHEREAS, Sandy Sprunt oversaw the establishment of Audubon's Tavernier Science Center
in the 1960's; and
WHEREAS, in 1967 Sandy Sprunt became a charter member of the Upper Keys Rotary Club;
and
WHEREAS, Sandy Sprunt served as the environmental representative on the Land Authority
Advisory Committee for 17 years; and
WHEREAS, Sandy Sprunt's leadership and support was instrumental in establishing the
Tropical Flyways land acquisition plan and the long-standing partnership between the State's
Florida Forever program and the Monroe County Land Authority, resulting in the protection of
hundreds of acres of conservation land in the Florida Keys; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of his leadership, in 2005 the Dove Creek Hammock Florida Keys
Wildlife and Environmental Area on Key Largo was dedicated in Sandy Sprunt's name; and
WHEREAS, Sandy Sprunt served on many boards and committees, including the Florida Keys
Land and Sea Trust, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council, the Florida
National Parks and Monuments Association, the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, the Asa
Wright Nature Center in Trinidad, and the Bahamas National Trust; and

WHEREAS, Sandy Sprunt is survived by his wife Donna Sprunt, children Betsey Lunsford and
Susan Sprunt, son-in-law Charles Lunsford, and grandchildren Ariel, Zachary, Hannah, Peyton,
and RochellEl; NOW THEREFORE
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY,
FLORIDA, that:
Section 1. The Board hereby adopts this Resolution as an expression of the Board's deepest
sympathy in the passing of the late Alexander "Sandy" Sprunt IV and in great appreciation of the
service he gave to his community.
Section 2. The Board hereby directs that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to the family of
Alexander "Sandy" Sprunt IV.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida, at
a meeting of said Board held on the 16th day of Kay 2007.
