During the grant review process for FY 2008, Florida Department of Children Families Emergency Shelter Grant Proposal Number 06F07KS3, submitted by Samuel's House, was not awarded full funding, reportedly due to a two point difference in the award process. Samuel's House was awarded only $23,906 of the $200,000 in funding requested from the Florida Department of Children and Families. WHEREAS, Samuel's House has provided housing and care coordination for women-in- crisis, homeless women, and women with children in Key West since 1999; and WHEREAS, over the past eight years, Samuel's House has continued to expand and improve services and facilities for homeless women and their children, including more beds, and additional services to help clients become self-sufficient; and WHEREAS, during the grant review process for FY 2008, Florida Department of Children and Families Emergency Shelter Grant Proposal Number 06F07KS3, submitted by Samuel's House, was not awarded full funding, reportedly due to a two point difference in the award process; and WHEREAS, Samuel's House was awarded only $23,906 of the $200,000 in funding requested from the Florida Department of Children and Families; and WHEREAS, Samuel's House has received State funding for seven (7) years, and relies upon both public and private grants to provide service to the community; and WHEREAS, funding from the Department of Children and Families in the amount of $102,000 is essential to cover operating expenses for Samuel's House, and ensure that Samuel's House will continue to provide services in the City of Key West and Monroe County, Florida; and WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida acknowledges that the services provided by Samuel's House are essential to the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Key West and Monroe County, Florida; 1 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1: That the Florida Department of Children and Families is hereby urged to restore funding for Emergency Shelter Grant Proposal Number 06F07KS3 in the amount of $102,000. Section 2: That the Clerk of the Court for Monroe County, Florida is hereby directed to transmit certified copies of this Resolution to the State of Florida Department of Children and Families Office on Homelessness, State Representative Ron Saunders and State Senator Larcenia Bullard. Section 3: That this Resolution shall go into effect immediately upon its passage and adoption by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida and attestation by the Monroe County Clerk of the Court. Passed and adopted by the Monroe County Board of Commissioners at a meeting held this 17th day of October, 2007.
