On May 9, 1995, he transferred within the County and became a crew chief in Recycling Operations. On February 15, 1998, he transferred again and became a Firefighter/EMT with Monroe County Fire Rescue, his current position. During the initial part of his employment wit Monroe County, Michael also volunteered as a firefighter with the Conch Key Volunteer Fire Department. Firefighter Saunders has regularly advanced his training within the Fire Rescue field. He is also a Florida Certified Paramedic and holds current certifications in: Advanced Provider of Trauma Life Support, Advanced Airway Certification, Advanced and Basic Cardiac Life Support, Aerial Operations and Tactics, Company Officer, and several Incident Command System Classes. Recently, he completed training to become a train the trainer for the Florida State C.E.R.T. Program, which stands for Community Emergency Response Team. With this training he will be going out into the local communities and training its residents on what to do prior to help arriving and how to best assist first responders. Of special note, is that Firefighter Saunders was awarded a Phoenix Award in March 2007, by Monroe County Fire Rescue, for the complete and successful resuscitation of a cardiac arrest patient. What is most noteworthy about Firefighter Saunders is not only that he is a longtime homeowner in Grassy Key, a committed and loving husband and father of two daughters (one in college), maintains top physical health, follows orders and direction with spirit, always striving to do the best possible job, but is his tremendous work ethic. He is currently stationed at Fire Station 17 on Conch Key and works extremely hard to assure his equipment and apparatus are in tip top shape; ready to assist, help, and save Monroe County residents and visitors when in need. All this and he maintains an almost perfect record of attendance. Monroe County is truly fortunate and honored to have a man such as Michael Saunders choose a career in public service, with Monroe County Fire Rescue. Trivette Growth Management Division Director Date: December 4, 2007 RE: 20 Years of Service Award for Joseph Paskalik Joe Paskalik started to work for the County on September 25, 1987 as a Building Inspector in the Building Department which at that time was located in Stock Island. Through the years, he worked himself up to Sr. Building Inspector/Plans Examiner. In 1999 he was promoted to Sr. Administrator, Assistant Building Official and a short year and one half later to Sr. Director Building Official, the position he holds today. His desire to better serve the County was the force that helped him take courses and successfully pass a multitude of tests to obtain all the necessary certifications needed to hold the position of Building Official. In his current position he needs to stay current on all the changes to the Building Code and assure that Monroe County abides by that code. Currently he supervises a staff of 36 employees located in three offices throughout the Keys. Mr. Paskalik was also a member of the first graduating class of Certified Public Managers (CPM) sponsored by the County. As you can see Mr. Paskalik has served the County very well through the last twenty years. We appreciate his accomplishments and the dedication that he exhibits year in and year out. Joe we want to congratulate you on this special occasion! Trivette Growth Management Division Director Date: December 4, 2007 RE: Employee Service Award for Dawn Bender, Customer Service Representative II Building Department, Marathon Comments from April Pearson, Executive Assistant, Engineering: I would like to nominate Dawn Bender, Building Department/Growth Management for Employee of the Month for March/Middle Keys. I have had the opportunity to deal with Dawn both as a member of the public and professionally as a fellow employee. When I worked with Dawn on our own personal building permit, she was extremely helpful and very fiiendly, and she went out of her way to follow through and expedite things when it was within her power to do so. But the most outstanding example of how Dawn exemplifies the mission of Monroe County to "provide outstanding public service responsive to the needs of our eitizens" came about a month ago late on a Friday afternoon. A eustomer had come into the Engineering Office in Key West by accident looking for the building department. Apparently he had gotten his final building inspections earlier that day, and was looking for someone who could send Keys Energy the authorization to turn on his final electric service. Even though it was late in the day, he was really hoping somebody could do this for him before the weekend. I called Dawn, knowing she had been helpful in the past. She told me that normally she wouldn't even see the customer's final inspection reports until Monday, and the paperwork to have the power turned on would be processed and sent out after that. But once I explained the situation and that the customer was standing here looking for help, she put me on hold, found the papers, and assured me that she would fax the necessary documentation to Keys Energy right away. I don't know what ever became of that customer, but I do know that when he left here he was very happy, and extremely grateful that Dawn would take the time to at least TRY to help. Thanks to employees like Dawn, at least one citizen of Monroe County realizes that we are serious about going the extra mile to serve our community. Because of this, I feel that Dawn Bender exemplifies the Values of Monroe County, and should earn "Employee of the Month." Comments from Division Director (Please read this section to the Board during the actual Presentation): Dawn has been with Monroe County for three years. In that short time, she has installed herself as a leader in the Building Department and as a person on which customers both internal and external depend on. She enjoys her job and it is apperent in her performance. Dawn has taken on the challenge of mastering the many tasks laid before her in the Building Department. She has taken a keen interest in serving the citizens of Monroe County and has been very successful in demonstrating her desire to excel!. Dawn exemplifies the mission of Monroe County to "provide outstanding public service responsive to the needs of our citizens".
