Water Quality Awareness Month Proclamation, February 7008
Whereas, the waters of the Florida Keys support the only living barrier coral. reef in the
continental United States and the sustainability of this ecosystem, including its coral and
fish populations, depends upon water of the highest quality.
Whereas, many strides have been made in improving water quality in Monroe County,
pollution from land still degrades near shore waters and affects marine life; and
Whereas, the tourist and fishing based economy the Florida Keys depends upon a
sustainable marine ecosystem with clean, clear water, and
Whereas, it is essential to maintain healthy and safe waters for swimming at public
beaches and other area throughout the Florida Keys; and
Whereas, each person has the responsibility to minimize impacts to near shore waters
while on land and at sea; and
Whereas, Monroe County, in association with other local and state governmental
sources, has devoted tens of millions dollars for wastewater and storm water
infrastructural improvements; and
Whereas, impacts to water quality in the Florida Keys also occur at the regional level,
and all citizens of Monroe County are encouraged to become informed and active
regarding regional concerns; and
Whereas water of the highest quality enhances the quality of life for everyone in
Monroe County and an increased awareness about water quality issues will lead to
improved water quality; now, therefore,
