assistance of the' Key West African Memorial Committee, have
success(ully petitioned the State of. Florida for the installation of an
historic plaque marking this burial site,
. Now therefore be it known that I, George R. Neugent, Mayor of .
Monroe County, hereby proclaim March 24, 2001 as
The Unveiling of the African Memorial Plaque
in Monroe CountY'and hereby commends the effort to commemorate
the burial of 2~4 Africans on our shore, and hereby. invites all citizens
to learn of. this unique period of local ~istory by participating in' the
