DUCK KEY BREAKWATER RESTORATION PROJECT
. Permit to be issued by Army Corps late December 2000
. Contractor selected for project (Subaqueous Services Inc.)
. Cost of Project approximately $3M
. Start date late Detember, completion Spring 2001
. 90 percent of costs funded by Federal Government
. Funded by Emergency Watershed Protection Legislation
. Funding tied to Hurricane Georges' and Irene
. Purpose to build up breakwater to pre disaster height (4 Ft.)
. This will be the last of the Canal Cleaning related projects
and funding whicb were started in late 1998 after Hurricane
Georges'

MIAMI-DADE BUS SERVICE TO MONROE COUNTY
(DADE- MONROE EXPRESS)
. Two Routes - Card Sound Road and to MM 98
. Card Sound from 5:30 A. M. to 7:10 P.M.
. MM 98 from 6:00 A.M. to 10:48 P.M.
. Partially funded by WAGES to bring workers into Monroe
County for job opportunities not available in Miami-Dade
County
. Botb routes originate at Wal-Mart in Florida City
. Card Sound Route goes to Ocean Reef Gate and returns
. US 1, (MM 98) goes to Tom Thumb Store at Rock Harbor
. Connections can be made to transit system into Miami
. Operated by private companies under contract with Miami-
Dade Transit
. Gives Monroe County citizens connectivity with Miami-
Dade County from MM 98, fare is $1.25

District ($400K).$200K per each County
. On line delivery of English as a Second Language (ESOL),
GED preparation skills, and Workforce Readiness Skills
. Funding is to strengthen the OnUne infrastructure system
and to build the online Curriculum

or a Divine Medical Technician (DMT) S200K Grant
. FKCC bas two existing hyperbaric chambers that were
donated by the Navy that will be configured to be used in
the course of instruction
. Skills are targeted toward Keys population to increase
upward economic mobility in higher paying positions in the
hyperbaric treatment industry
Hyperbaric Medicine is used to treat wounds, infections, gas
poisoning, burns, and diving related cases (omitted
decompression or embolism) using oxygen under pressure

lJBBl\RY GRANT FOR $56K FOR MOBILE COMPUTERS
. Grant from the Federal Institute of Museum and Library
Services for $56,000
. Use - For a mobile training lab to provide for library
electronic resource training to County employees,
organizations, clubs, and Community Centers
. Grant will finance 12 wireless laptops with server for
exportable training throughout Monroe County
. Grant fosters leadership, innovation, and lifetime learning
. Grant purpose is to utilize projects with technology to bring
information to people in innovative ways and to ensure
library services are accessible to those having difficulty in
using the libraries in remote or rural locations
. Train the trainer concept will be utilized by having
designated library personnel trained in advance to deliver
various services and programs associated with the grant
. Monroe County was one of only 90 projects funded
. Program will be become operational in 2001 upon
procurement of hardware/software and County employee
training

Keys libraries are
going. on the road
Federal grant
to help finance
laptop compu~ers
Thanks to a $56,192 grant
from the federal Institute of
Museum and Library Services,
the Monroe County Library
System will be taking a mobile
computer training lab on the
road to provide library-electron-
ic resource training to organiza-
tions, clubs and community cen-
ters. Librarians will benefit
from training workshops geared
(0 polish their computer and
presentation skills.
The grant will finance 12

server to hook into the library
network. "
The Institute of Museum and
Library Services is a federal
gram-making agency that fos-
ters leadership, innovation and a
lif~time of learning by support-
ing museums and libraries.
Through a congressional act,
the institute provided money to
the Florida Department of
State's Library Division to dis:" .;
tribute through competitive .
grant applications. Special
emphasis was placed on projects
that utilize technology to bring
informatio~ to people in innova-
tive and effective ways, and to
assure that library service is
accessible to all, especially
those who have difficulty using
the library.
Monroe County's was one of
only 90 projects funded.

libraries Director Norma Kula,
"This grant award provides our
libraries an invaluable bridge to
the community. Train the
Trainer classes for our librari-
ans, in concert with the mobile
computer lab, will benefit pre-
sent and future library users."
