A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA IN
SUPPORT OF RENAMING THE FEDERAL BUILDING
LOCATED AT 301 SIMONTON STREET, KEY WEST,
FLORIDA, THE "SIDNEY M ARONOVITZ UNITED STATES
COURTHOUSE' PER H.R. 2913 CONGRESSIONAL BILL AS
INTRODUCED BY REPRESENTATIVE ILEANA ROS-
LEHTINEN.
WHEREAS, Congressional Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen has introduced H.R.
2913 to rename the federal building located at 301 Simonton Street, Key West, Florida as the
"Sidney M. Aronovitz United States Courthouse"; and
WHEREAS, the late Sidney M. Aronovitz brought honor to the legal profession and his
community by his dedicated and distinctive service as a United States District Judge for the
Southern District of Florida from 1976 until his death in 1997; and
WHEREAS, prior to his appointment to the federal branch in 1976 by President Gerald
Ford, Judge Aronovitz served as a United States Army Captain from 1943 to 1946, with multiple
World War II field decorations, including the Bronze Star; and was appointed by U.S. Supreme
Court Justice William Rehnquist to serve as a member of the original U.S. Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Court, from 1988 to 1992; and
WHEREAS, Judge Aronovitz tirelessly defended the United States Constitution by
protecting the rights of the homeless, women, Cuban refugees and other minorities, and by
serving as the frrst leader of muhiple vital religious, educationa~ and health organizations,
including Founding Chairman of the Dade County Little HUD Housing Authority; and
WHEREAS, Judge Aronovitz served as the President of the Hillel Advisory Council and
Miami Hillel Foundation at the University of Miami from 1950 to 1954, and demonstrated
unswerving dedication to the administration of the rule of law without consideration of race,
creed, or national origin for which he received the Gold Medallion Award by the National
Council of Christians and Jews; and
WHEREAS, Judge Aronovitz, who was born in Key West, Florida on June 20, 1920,
President of the Senior Class and Valedictorian of the Key West High School Class of 1937, and
initial inductee of the University of Florida School of Law "Hall of Fame", led a life of principle
and accomplishments that stands as a model for any person who aspires to serve the interests of
equal justice under the law;

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida that:
1. The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners fully supports that
Congress designates the federal building located at 301 Simonton Street, Key
West, Florida, as the "Sidney M. Aronovitz United States Courthouse."
2. The Clerk is hereby directed to forward copies of this resolution to Senator Bill
Nelson and Senator Mel Martinez, U. S. Senate; Representative Ron Saunders,
District 120; Senator Larcenia Bullard, District 39; Congresswoman Ileana Ros-
Lehtinen, District 18; and Congressman Mario Diaz-Ba1art, District 25.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners by the said
board at a meeting held on the 15th day of July, 2009.

To designate the United States courthouse located at 301 Simonton Street in Key
West, Florida, as the 'Sidney M. Aronovitz United States Courthouse'.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of
America in Congress assembled,
SECTION 1. DESIGNATION.
The United States courthouse located at 301 Simonton Street in Key West, Florida,
shall be known and designated as the 'Sidney M. Aronovitz United States Court-
house' .
SEC. 2. REFERENCES.
Any reference in a law, map, regulation, document, paper, or other record of the
United States to the United States courthouse referred to in section 1 shall be
deemed to be a reference to the 'Sidney M. Aronovitz United States Courthouse'.
