ITEM BACKGROUND: PREVIOUS RELEVANT HOCC ACTION: CONTRACT/AGREEMENT CHANGES: ST AFF RECOMMENDATIONS: TOTAL COST: INDIRECf COST: BUDGETED: Yes _No DIFFERENTIAL OF LOCAL PREFERENCE: COST TO COUNTY: SOURCE OF FUNDS: REVENUE PRODUCING: Yes No AMOUNT PER MONTH_ Year APPROVED BY: County Atty _ OMBlPurchasing _ Risk Management_ DOCUMENT A TION: Included ~ Not Required_ DISPOSITION: AGENDA ITEM # Q, I Revised 7/09 Southeast Florida Regional Climate Leadenhip Summit Day WHEREAS, Monroe County, Florida, is located within the region of Southeast Florida, and is a neighboring county with Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, and Broward counties; and WHEREAS, Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, and Browud Counties, herein the four counties that constitute the Southeast Florida Region, share in common a strong quality of life rooted in the region's rich cultural heritage, vigorous economy, and environmental resources of global significance; and WHEREAS, the aforementioned fout counties of Southeast Florida, which represent approximately 300/0 of the population of the State of Florida, are physically linked one to the other by the Atlantic Ocean coastline and share some of the world's most renowned natural resources such as the Everglades, our unique coral reefs, beautiful beaches, and fragile Keys ecosystem; a.nd WHEREAS, the more than five million residents of Southeast Florida depend upon and value these natural resources and the unique quality of life that defines the region; and WHEREAS, ~ionroe Counl}T, in conjunction with Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Broward counties, recognizes that Florida is one of the most vulnerable areas in the countty to the impacts of global climate cha.nge and th2.t the Southeast Florida region is at the frontline to receive these impacts, especially the effects of sea level rise; and WHEREAS, the four counties of Southeas t Ronda share in common these disproportionately significant risks because of the anticipated impacts to our water resources, flood control systems, and other public infrastructure; and WHEREAS, Monroe County, in conjunction with our neighboring counties, recognize that regional collaboration and collective action on this, the defming issue for Southeast Florida of the 21st Century, will best serve the citizens of the region; and WHEREAS, on October 23, 2009, Monroe County, along with representatives of the other counties of the Southeast. Florida Region, and other local, regional, state, and federal policy makers, regional planning and transportation authorities and County Climate Change Task Force members will come together at the first SOlllbt(l!t Florida RJlioNa/ Climate uadership SlIm",it to build a collaborative response to global climate change; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED ANn AGREED TO BY THE MONROE COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA: That October 23, 2009 i. hereby de.ignated Southeast Florida Climate Leadership Summit Day, a day of conaboration between Monroe, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Btoward Counties in which collective local effort enables the Southeast Florida Region to assume global leadership in climate change action.
