Mayor's Proclamation
Water Quality Awareness Month
February 2010
WHEREAS, the waters of the Florida Keys support the only living barrier coral
reef in the continental United States and the sustainabi lity of this ecosystem
depends upon water of the highest quality; and
WHEREAS, the tourist and fishing based economy of the Florida Keys depends
upon a healthy marine ecosystem with clean, clear water and safe swimming
beaches; and
WHEREAS, individuals, businesses and governments have the responsibility to
minimize impacts to coastal waters from land-based sources of pollution and
activities on and in the water; and
WHEREAS, Monroe County, in association with local and state government
agencies, has made significant progress in upgrading wastewater and storm water
infrastructure; and
WHEREAS, water quality directly impacts the quality of life for everyone in
Monroe County and an increased awareness of this issue wi II lead to improved
water quality.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sylvia Murphy, by virtue of the power vested in me as
Mayor of Monroe County, Florida, hereby proclaim the month of February, 2010
as
WATER QUALITY AWARENESS MONTH
