AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Presentation and approval of a Resolution allowing the Students
Peace Alliance to dedicate, with a plaque, a portion of all Monroe County Parks as a Community Peace
Park.
ITEM BACKGROUND: Monroe County High School and Middle School students gathering
together to show solidarity throughout the Florida Keys by promoting a non-denominational, non-
partisan and a non-opinionated stand on war message of peace. There is no designated area being
asked for and no participation required or expected of any park visitors. The student group will be
purchasing and placing the plaques

RESOLUTION

A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA IN SUPPORT OF THE DEDICATION OF A
PORTION OF ALL MONROE COUNTY PARKS AS PEACE PARKS
WHEREAS, the issue of peace embraces the deepest hopes of all peoples and
remains humanity's guiding inspiration; and
WHEREAS, four Community Peace Parks to-date, at Upper Keys church and
community based parks, have been dedicated to the ideals of peace, both inner peace
as well as peace among individuals, organizations, communities, cultures, and
nations; and
WHEREAS, Community Peace Parks are places where people can take time out to
relax, reduce stress, contemplate, meditate, honor nature and cultivate more peace in
their lives; and
WHEREAS, there is a growing support within our County, especially within the
High School population, in support of peace and non-violence, including, but
certainly not limited to, the eradication of domestic violence, child abuse, gang
violence, school violence, and terrorism; and
WHEREAS, global crises impels all citizens to work toward converting
humanity's noblest aspirations for world peace into a practical reality for future
generations;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida, that:
A portion of all Monroe County Parks be dedicated as Community Peace
Parks at a public dedication ceremony commemorated by a plaque which
states, "Community Peace Park - We are All the Keys to Peace"
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida, at a meeting of said Board held on the _day

MAYOR'S PROCLAMATION
SAFE BOATING WEEK IN MONROE COUNTY-MAY 22-28, 2010
WHEREAS, The Florida Keys, with their bounty and beauty, are the boating and fishing capital of
the world; and
WHEREAS, boating and fishing year round are large recreational activities for the residents of and
visitors to Monroe County and essential to our economy; and
WHEREAS, the protection of life and property are the legal and moral responsibility of every boater;
and
WHEREAS, in 2008 Monroe County recorded the highest number of boating accidents in Florida;
and
WHEREAS, it is both proper and necessary to remind all boaters of their responsibility to
continuously improve their boating skills and seamanship to more safely navigate our local waters; and
WHEREAS, to this end, all boaters are asked to continue in the spirit of Safe Boating Week
throughout the entire year by wearing a life jacket, completing a safe boating education course,
requesting an annual vessel safety check, operating vessels safely, responsibly and soberly and obeying
Coast Guard regulations and the "Rules of the Road".
NOW THEREFORE, I, Sylvia Murphy, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of
Monroe County, Florida, do hereby proclaim May 22 through May 28,2010 as
Safe Boating Week in Monroe County

MAYOR'S PROCLAMATION
MOTE MARINE LABORATORY'S 55TH ANNIVERSARY
and June 13-19,2010 as Mote Marine Laboratory Week
WHEREAS, Mote Marine Laboratory was created as the Cape Haze Marine Laboratory in 1955 by Dr. Eugenie Clark to
teach people about the sea in a two-room 240 square foot shed in Placida, and was relocated to Siesta Key in 1960 and
renamed Mote Marine Laboratory in honor of its major benefactor, William R. Mote, before moving in 1978 to its current
headquarters on City Island, Sarasota, and;
WHEREAS, world renown Mote Marine Laboratory is one of the few remaining independent marine research centers
with more than 191 staff members, 34 of whom have doctoral degrees, and nearly 1,300 volunteers conducting marine
research and education projects in Monroe County and in more than 50 countries around the world, and;
WHEREAS, the Laboratory currently has 200,000 square feet of research, education and public outreach space on a 10.5
acre campus on City Island in Sarasota, as well as a 200-acre inland aquaculture park in Sarasota and field stations in
Charlotte Harbor and the Florida Keys on Key West and Summerland Key, and;
WHEREAS, Mote Marine Laboratory has performed significant community service for the citizens of Monroe County
through environmental education and scientific studies of Florida Bay, the Atlantic Ocean contiguous wetlands, coral reef
areas of Monroe County, including the establishment of an educational exhibit at the Nancy Foster Eco-Discovery Center
and;
WHEREAS, Mote Marine Laboratory has answered the challenge of educating the public about marine and estuarine
ecosystems through its public Aquarium which hosts 350,000 visitors annually and its education programs which reach
28,000 students annually; and
WHEREAS, Mote Marine Laboratory, is celebrating 55 years of advancing the science of the sea through research,
education and community service, and;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sylvia Murphy, by virtue of the power vested in me as Mayor of Monroe County, wish to
recognize and applaud the trustees, staff and volunteers of Mote Marine Laboratory on the occasion of the
MOTE MARINE LABORATORY'S 55th Anniversary
and proclaim June 13-19,2010 as Mote Marine Laboratory Week, with June 13, 1955 being the date of incorporation of
the Laboratory.
