WHEREAS,
the American Red Cross established the National Red Cross Life Saving Corps in 1914
to be swimmers and swimmers to be
and;
WHEREAS,
the first Life Saving Station opened near Jacksonville, Florida in 1914, and remains open
today, and;
WHEREAS,
the Red Cross began teaching lifesaving skills to soldiers during World War I, and
continues teaching First Aid, lifesaving and water safety to the public, as well as to camp counselors,
recreation personnel such as pool and beach lifeguards, and;
WHEREAS,
two Key Largo lifeguards rescued a 21-year old Miami man on March 31, 2010 at John
Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, and;
WHEREAS,
Debra Madison and Jon Landau also work at Jacobs Aquatic Center swimming pool,
keeping swimmers safe, having been trained by American Red Cross in CPR and to use an Automated
External Defibrillator, and
NOW, THEREFORE,
I, Sylvia Murphy, by virtue of the power vested in me as Mayor of Monroe
County, do hereby proclaim June as
RED CROSS WATER SAFETY MONTH
In Monroe County and urge all citizens, residents and visitors to also recognize these two lifeguards
and others who save the lives of visitors and residents.

WHEREAS,
The Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA), the
organization for Italian Americans, was founded in 1905 by Vincenzo Sellaro, M.D. and six other
themselves into American society, and
WHEREAS,
in its early years OSIA established free schools to teach immigrants English and centers
to help them become U.S. citizens, and
WHEREAS,
the first lodges also had orphanages and homes for the elderly, life insurance and
mortuary funds, credit unions, welfare societies for the needy and scholarships, and
WHEREAS,
today, the Sons of Italy has more than 500,000 family members and supporters and a
network of more than 650 chapters coast to coast, and
WHEREAS,
in 1959, OSIA established its philanthropic arm, The Sons of Italy Foundation (SIF)
which has given more than $109 million to numerous charitable, educational and cultural efforts to
date, and
NOW, THEREFORE,
I, Sylvia Murphy, by virtue of the power vested in me as Mayor of Monroe
