Michelle Gilliland
Employee Services Award for the month of May
Michelle Gilliland has been with the County Social Services office for two years working tirelessly in
the Plantation Key office as Staff Assistant. During her two-year tenure, Michelle has never uttered a
discouraging word. Her humor and practical compassion make her the perfect person to cope with the
many Social Services clients most of whom are in crisis.
Michell's duties include a variety of responsibilities from doing all the intakes for the electrical
assistance and in-home services, to calling Bingo for the Senior Center once or twice a month.
Michelle's professional and melodic boice answers the phone, greets the clients and interfaces with
other agencies, and does so in an efficient manner... not an easy task when dealing with people who
have lost their unemployment, or are being evicted, or are about to have their electricity disconnected.
As her supervisor, I am blessed to work with Michelle. Her intelligence and humor and faith certainly
make my days brighter.

MONROE COUNTY EMPLOYEE SERVICE NOMINATION FORM
NAME OF NOMINEE: GEORGE BRENTNALL
POSITION: VETERANS COUNSELOR
DEPT.
DEPARTMENTVETERAN AFFAIRS
SUBMITTED BY:WILLlAM HAYS
TITLE: DIRECTOR
JUSTIFICATION: (use additional sheets, if necessary.)
Division Director Comments:
George Brentnall has served as a Veterans Counselor for the Veteran Affairs Department for the past five and
half years. His performance in this regard has been no less than outstanding.
Mr. Brentnall is totally dedicated and committed to providing quality assistance to the veteran community
throughout Monroe County. He demonstrates this by consistently going above and beyond in his efforts to
ensure his clients receive the benefits they are entitled to.
His dedication often extends beyond the office. He provides veteran benefit presentations to nearby active
military units and veteran service organizations. He conducts outreach visits to veterans and survivors who are
medically unable to come into the office. Much of his free time is spent attending and participating in local
veteran events.
One recent example where Mr. Brentnall's extra effort paid off was illustrated on the front page of the June 15,
2010 edition of the Key West Citizen newspaper. The story covered a ceremony honoring a U.S. Army soldier
who died in Japanese hands after the Death March in 1942 and a Key West Army veteran who survived 33
months in a Chinese prison camp during the Korean War. The Purple Heart Medal was presented to the son of
the Army soldier who died during the Death March and the POW Medal was awarded to the Army veteran who
survived 33 months captivity in the Chinese prison camp.
Mr. Brentnallleamed of sacrifices of these two veterans in April of 2005. He contacted the Pentagon in
Washington and initiated the necessary forms and documents to see that these two veterans were properly
recognized for their service and sacrifice. It took almost five years of follow up by Mr. Brentnall before the
medals were finally awarded.
Mr. Brentnall does an excellent job and serves the veteran community well. He is liked and respected by all
those he comes in contact with. I am pleased to have him in the Department and he is certainly deserving of the
Employee of the Month Award.
