MAYOR'S PROCLAMATION
November 20, 2010 as National Adoption Day in Monroe County
WHEREAS, the youth of Monroe County are precious to each of us and represent our greatest hope
for the future, and all children deserve a nurturing, safe and stable environment in which they can grow
up to enjoy the benefits of a healthy and productive life; and
WHEREAS, National Adoption Day is a collective national effort to raise awareness of the 510,000
children in foster care, 130,000 of who are waiting to be adopted; and
WHEREAS, more that 20 children in Monroe County are waiting for their adoptions to be finalized;
and
WHEREAS, OurKids of Miami- Dade /Monroe and Wesley House Family Services recognize the
valuable contributions of adoptive parents who continually strive to improve the quality of life for the
children they bring into their families; and
WHEREAS, celebrations in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico will acknowledge
the children who deserve stable and loving families and encourage dedicated individuals to make a
powerful difference in the life of a child through adoption;
NOW THEREFORE, by virtue of the power vested in me as Mayor of Monroe County, Florida, I
Sylvia Murphy, do hereby declare
November 20, 2010 as National Adoption Day in Monroe County
and in doing so, urge all citizens to join in a national effort to raise awareness about the importance of
adoption.

MAYOR'S PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the Monroe County Commission recognizes the power of charitable giving to meet
critical health and human services needs; and
WHEREAS, the United Way of the Florida Keys is a not - for -profit organization dedicated to raising
operational funds needed by various vital human service agencies that assist youth, the elderly, and
other members of our community who are in need; and
WHEREAS, the agencies that receive financial support from the United Way of the Florida Keys are
the American Red Cross, Big Pine Athletic Association, Boys and Girls Clubs of the Keys Area, Boy
Scouts of America, Burton Memorial Methodist Church Food Pantry, Domestic Abuse Shelter, Easter
Seals Florida Keys Region, Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition, Florida Keys Outreach Coalition,
Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida, Marathon Recreation Center, Helpline, MARC -- Monroe
Association for Retarded Citizens, Keys Center Academy, Wesley House Family Services; and
WHEREAS, the United Way of the Florida Keys is primarily funded by local contributions from
generous individuals and businesses; and
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners supports the efforts of the United Way of the
Florida Keys to assist its local human service agencies.
NOW THEREFORE, by virtue of the power vested in me as Mayor of Monroe County, Florida, I
Sylvia Murphy, do hereby proclaim
October 2010 as United Way Month
in Monroe County throughout the Florida Keys.
