AGENDA ITEM WORDING:
th
Discussion and possible direction to staff to reinstate opening the county libraries to include a 6 day.
ITEM BACKGROUND:
The libraries were closed on Mondays starting March 2008--a mid-year budget correction. The Public
th
has expressed a continued interest in reestablishing library hours to include a 6 day.
The Monroe County Library system has seen significant increased usage. People of all ages and
backgrounds are doing more than just reading a novel or taking out DVD's. They are using the library's
services for job and career development, vital for economic and revenue growth. For Monroe County
to meet the growing and unmet needs of our population and for our future well-being, restoring a sixth
day to the library system will give dividends with long-term benefits.
According to the latest statewide assessments, the Monroe County Library system offers a $4.97 ROI
for each public dollar invested. The correlation to economic impact - and quality of life - is dramatic.
The value of an educated work force, and community, imbued with ideas and imagination, are the very
fuel for a vibrant, attractive, employer and employee environment.
