ITEM BACKGROUND: The U.S. Census Bureau released population, housing, and other information on March 17, 2011. Included is summary information for Monroe County and the incorporated municipalities. Additionally, information from 2000 has been included for comparison purposes. Attachments include Census 2010 Profiles for unincorporated Monroe County, Key West, Marathon, Key Colony Beach, Layton and Islamorada. The 3 -page profiles have one table for the total population, followed by a similar table for the adult population (18 years and older) and another for children (under 18). The following tables provide summary information for Monroe County and the incorporated municipalities. Information from the 2000 Census has been included for comparison purposes. The permanent population for the Florida Keys (unincorporated and incorporated) declined by 8% ( -6,499 people) from the year 2000 to 2010. Total housing units increased by 1,147 units or 2 %. The number of occupied units decreased by 2,457 units or 7 %. Vacant units increased by 3,604 units or 22 %. These tables are presented below.
