Peryam Monroe County Sheriffs Office 5525 College Road Key West, FL 33040 Dear Sheriff Robert P. Peryam: I would like to take this opportunity to share some information with you on the efforts of Florida's PDMP Foundation and why this project is so important. The abuse and diversion of controlled substance prescription medication is a major public health and safety concern in Florida. According to the 2010 Florida Medical Examiners Commission Report on Drugs Identified in Deceased Persons, prescription medications such as Benzodiazepines, Oxycodone, Methadone, Morphine and Hydrocodone were responsible of the majority of drug - related deaths tracked by this report. The report also stated that in the last year alone, that 2,710 individuals died with at least one prescription drug in their system that was identified as the cause of death. The Florida Legislature passed the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) into law during the 2009 session, Unfortunately, in these difficult financial times, state funding for the new PDMP was not authorized. I am pleased to report, however, that through limited federal grants and private donations, the system is operational today and being utilized by pharmacists and doctors to help identify doctor -shoppers and other illegitimate users. It is for this reason that I am writing to you today to ask for your financial assistance with the Florida PDMP before the funds are completely depleted. Your support will aid in reducing the scope of prescription drug abuse and diversion in Florida and provide the necessary funding to continue to operate the PDMP. Only by creating an environment that is less conducive to diversion can we meet our goal of reducing overdose deaths and addiction rates in Florida while at the same time providing relief to millions of patients receiving legally prescribed pain medication. If you desire to support the PDMP, please contact me at dbowen@ahcs.com or telephone number (954) 874-2116. Sincerely, David S.
