Resolution 018-2012 v 'r ., Mayor Rice RESOLUTION 018 -2012 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA DESIGNATING THE SHERIFF'S SUBSTATION AT MARATHON, FLORIDA AS THE "JOHN M. SPOTTSWOOD SUBSTATION". WHEREAS, John M. Spottswood was born in Key West, Florida on June 17, 1920; and WHEREAS, he attended public schools in Key West during his early teens and then entered Riverside Military Academy from which he graduated in 1938; and WHEREAS, for seven years he was a Key West reporter for the Miami Daily News and an agent for the New York Life Insurance Company; and WHEREAS, in 1940 he accepted a position as purchasing agent at the Key West Naval Station and two years later he resigned and entered the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant; and WHEREAS, in 1945, after serving in WWII, John Spottswood received an honorable discharge from the Army as a Captain and returned to Key West to launch his business career and later became the largest individual land owner in Key West and established the first radio station in Key West; and WHEREAS, in 1952, with the aid of his wife Mary, he was elected Sheriff of Monroe County; and WHEREAS, his fellow sheriffs elected him as the first chairman of the Florida Sheriff's Boy's Ranch Board of Trustees and for five consecutive terms he was chairman of the Florida Sheriff's Association Board of Directors; and WHEREAS, he was elected Sheriff of Monroe County for three successive terms, and in 1963, while serving in that capacity, he won the Democratic nomination for the 41st Senatorial District, serving all major committees; and WHEREAS, it was during Senator Spottswood's term as Sheriff that law enforcement was extended out into the Keys , and under his leadership the first substation outside the City of Key West was opened at Plantation Key, and a second substation in Marathon was created; and WHEREAS, the City of Key West and the County of Monroe became better places to live because Mr. Spottswood contributed so much to make it so, and he served his country in the military, his state in the Senate, and his community as Sheriff; and Page 1 of 2 .ram . t WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida, hereby desires to designate the Sheriff's Substation at Marathon, Florida in honor of the late John M. Spottswood; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA that the Board hereby designates the current substation at Marathon, Florida as the "JOHN M SPOTTSWOOD SUBSTATION" and hereby directs that the name be established at the building and appropriately in County records. PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida at a regular meeting of the Board held on the -k'qt.day of January, 2012.
