JUSTIFICATION: (use additional sheets, if necessary.)
Rhonda Haag. has been with the County for less than a year. Shortly after her arrival she was
assigned the task of organizing the Third Annual Climate Leadership Summit for the SE Florida
climate Compact of which Monroe County has been a partner since the Compact was founded
in 2009. Never before had the County organized sdch an eant and the Ievel of effort and
teamwork needed among county staff was unprecedented. The Summit was a rousing success
because of Rhonda's organizational and leadership skills and it increased Monroe County's
image to that of a prominent partner among our mainland county colleagues.
Rhonda's leadership with County staff to handle the various logistical challenges forged a
focused partnership among at. least six different county departments. Indeed, the challenges
that had to be met in organizing the event were substantial given that County staff had never
before organized such an event. And= as a new employee, Rhonda had. to learn to navigate the
various county legal and permitting requirements while working under tight deadlines and
competing demands in addition to coordinating with two other simultaneous events that were
held at the same facility during the Summit. Her leadership also is evident from the Summit
evaluations: Attendees gave the organization of the Summit the highest ranking of 4.8 of 5
(Strongly Agree).
The Summit was attended by over 250 people and went a long way toward educating the
attendees about the potential impacts of climate change to our Keys way of life and actions that
can be taken to mitigate or adapt to the challenges of climate change. The momentum created
by the Summit will help Monroe County, our municipalities and businesses and residents
manage these challenges more effectively than before.
In addition, County staff and the BCCC have all expressed pride in the success of the Climate
Leadership Summit. -
Indeed, in her short tenure, Rhonda has demonstrated 5 of the 8 following nomination criteria. It
is also noteworthy that the task of organizing the Summit was in addition to her regular duties of
managing the $3.2M Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant,
