The grant is from the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Initiative (STEM) at the National Flight Academy in Pensacola, Florida. This program will fund the tuition and transportation for 32 students, grade -1 , approved based on District criteria f om the three Keys high schools to attend the Explore Ambition Program the last week of March. This is an excellent opportunity to expose Monroe County Youth to opportunities in the Aviation field. In less than a year, Mr. Lanman has already proved himself to be an exceptional representative on the regional board for Monroe County. He partnered with Rick Beasley, the SFW1B Executive Director, to bring to Monroe County a $60,000 Explore Ambition grant for Monroe County Youth. The grant is from the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Initiative (STEM) at the National Flight Academy in Pensacola, Florida. The STEM program will fund the tuition and transportation for up to 50 students, grade 9-12, from the three Keys high schools to attend the Explore Ambition Program the last week of March. This is an excellent opportunity to expose high school students to educational and career opportunities in the Aviation field from technology and mechanical engineering to aviation management degrees. The Board would like to express our sincere appreciation to Donald Lanman for his outstanding service on the South Florida Workforce Investment Board, and his initiative in bringing this grant program to expose our youth to exceptional careers in the Aviation field. "Basically, they've built a simulated aircraft carrier inside of a hangar up there," said Key West High Schooi Aviation Club member Caleb Hiller_ "It's got a control tourer, mass hall and all the other things a real carrier would have, We get to act as controllersand pilots, performing missions, and testing their new systems. H e'd I ike to one day fly for the N avy o r Ai r Force, and eventually become a commercial pilot, having developed a love of fling while hanging around the airport when he was a child, with his dad_ The other 31 students traveling to Pensacola with Hiller from March 24 to 29, a I l had to meet the same criteria, with at least a 2.5 Grade Point Average, fewer than five absences from school, (unless those pupils had been hospitalized,) as well as several other qualifications - "First and foremost, the students have to have an interest in STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics] education, "' said Monroe County School District Secondary Education Supervisor Camilla Burton , who has helped area high school students apply to the program. They pitched the idea to Superintendent of Schools Mark Porter, and District Director of Teaching and Learning, Theresa A ford, who alerted Burton to the project, "Khan Rick and Don brought this to us, my biggest concern was that I didn't want it to be a one-time wonder, I wanted it to become a sustainable program," Burton said. "And that's what we're hoping to do. We've been searching for a while for ways to build STEM programs in our schools. I thought this was a wonderful opportunity to grab ahold of sustainable program_"' At press time, there were still openings for 18 students.
