DONALD LANMAN INTRODUCTION:
Mr. Donald Lanman was appointed as the District 4 BOCC representative last July of 2012 to the
South Florida Workforce Investment Board, which is one of 24 regional boards chartered by the
State of Florida for workforce development, representing Miami -Dade and Monroe Counties. In
less than a year, Mr. Lanman has already proved himself to be an exceptional representative on
the regional board for Monroe County.
He partnered with Rick Beasley, the SFW1B Executive Director, to bring to Monroe County a
$60,000 Explore Ambition grant for Monroe County Youth. The grant is from the Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Math Initiative (STEM) at the National Flight Academy in
Pensacola, Florida. The STEM program will fund the tuition and transportation for up to 50
students, grade 9-12, from the three Keys high schools to attend the Explore Ambition Program
the last week of March. This is an excellent opportunity to expose high school students to
educational and career opportunities in the Aviation field from technology and mechanical
engineering to aviation management degrees.
The Board would like to express our sincere appreciation to Donald Lanman for his outstanding
service on the South Florida Workforce Investment Board, and his initiative in bringing this
grant program to expose our youth to exceptional careers in the Aviation field.

The sk 's the limit for 32 students interested in aviation.
Than ks to a $60, 000 g rant p rocured by th a South Flo rids Workforce I n vestment Boa rd (SFW1 B ), the p u p ils,
from the ninth through 11th grades, are prepping up to spend their March break participating in the National
Flight Academy's Explore Ambition Program, located at Naval Air Station, Pensacola.
"Basically, they've built a simulated aircraft carrier inside of a hangar up there," said Key West High Schooi
Aviation Club member Caleb Hiller_ "It's got a control tourer, mass hall and all the other things a real carrier
would have, We get to act as controllersand pilots, performing missions, and testing their new systems.
One of the simulated plane we're going to be flying is still in the design stage, and hasn't been built yet, so
that's going to be really interesting. 11

Force, and eventually become a commercial pilot, having developed a love of fling while hanging around
the airport when he was a child, with his dad_
The other 31 students traveling to Pensacola with Hiller from March 24 to 29, a I l had to meet the same
criteria, with at least a 2.5 Grade Point Average, fewer than five absences from school, (unless those pupils
had been hospitalized,) as well as several other qualifications -
"First and foremost, the students have to have an interest in STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics] education, "' said Monroe County School District Secondary Education Supervisor Camilla
Burton , who has helped area high school students apply to the program. "We granted to open it up to a well-
rounded group, ared not ]ust our high achievers. Th is is workforce training, after ali. However, use did want
the participants to be kids who showed responsibility, 41
The orQgram. which is already in place in Miami -Dade CoUnty_ was brought to the Keys by SFWIB
Executive Director Rick Beasley, and his board member Don Lanman, who sen►es as a senior vice
president and matketinfl director of First State Bank of the Florida Keys.
Th in ki ng the progra m was a good id ea F and one th at cou Id lily i n Mon roe Cou my , the pa it set about secu ring
funding to bring it here. They pitched the idea to Superintendent of Schools Mark Porter, and District
Director of Teaching and Learning, Theresa A ford, who alerted Burton to the project,
"Khan Rick and Don brought this to us, my biggest concern was that I didn't want it to be a one-time
wonder, I wanted it to become a sustainable program," Burton said. "And that's what we're hoping to do.
We've been searching for a while for ways to build STEM programs in our schools. I thought this was a
wonderful opportunity to grab ahold of sustainable program_"'
At press time, there were still openings for 18 students. Anyone wishing to take part in the program should
call Camilla Burton at 05- g -1400, ext_ 53365-
