RESOLUTION NO. 077 - 2014
A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA
SUPPORTING THE RENAMING OF "LITTLE BASIN"
(ALSO KNOWN AS "LITTLE BASIN FLAT") LOCATED
IN UPPER MATECUMBE KEY, ISLAMORADA,
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, TO "TWO GEORGE
FLAT".
WHEREAS, "Little Basin "(also known as "Little Basin Flat ") is located on Upper
Matecumbe Key in Islamorada, Monroe County, Florida and is known as a preferred fishing area
of George H.W. Bush and George Hommell, Jr., a well -known backcountry guide in Islamorada
in the Florida Keys; and
WHEREAS, George Hommell, Jr.'s fishing success attracted an impressive list of
notable clients including the 41" President of the United States, George H.W. Bush; and
WHEREAS, while officially retiring from work as an active fishing guide in 1988,
Hommell continued to guide President Bush whenever visiting Islamorada; and
WHEREAS, President Bush loved the Florida Keys and its fishing with his most
memorable catch being a 135 pound tarpon, the biggest the President had ever caught; and
WHEREAS, George H. W. Bush and George Hommell, Jr. became the closest of
friends, both supporting the conservation and protection of the flats fishing of bonefish, tarpon
and permit; and
WHEREAS, in 1988, Hommell was appointed to head then - President George H.W.
Bush's INTERCOM committee to promote better management of the nation's fishing resources
and water quality, which are so important to Florida's economy; and
WHEREAS, Hommell was also a founding member of the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust
whose mission is to conserve and enhance global bonefish, tarpon and permit fisheries and their
environment; and
WHEREAS, George Hommell was the co- founder of "Wide World of Sportsman" in
Islamorada which he and the late Billy Pate sold to Johnny Morris, founder of Bass Pro Shops in
1997; it became a huge tourist attraction and George continued to be a daily presence at the store
until shortly before his passing; and
WHEREAS, an effort is being made to rename "Little Basin" Flat to "Two George Flat"
which requires support by local government; and
WHEREAS, it is the desire of this Commission to express its support of the renaming of
"Little Basin" Flat to "Two George Flat ";

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida hereby:
Supports the renaming of "Little Basin" located in Monroe County, Florida (also known
as "Little Basin Flat'), to "Two George Flat ".
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County,
Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held on the 16` day of April, 2014.
