A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA IN
SUPPORT OF DESIGNATING THAT PORTION OF U.S. 1/
S.R. 5 BETWEEN CARD SOUND ROAD IN MIAMI -DADE
COUNTY, FLORIDA AND C.R. 905 IN MONROE COUNTY,
FLORIDA (KNOWN AS THE 6 6 1 8-MILE STRETCH") AS
"PURPLE HEART TRAIL" AND REQUESTING THE
FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
INSTALL, ERECT AND MAINTAIN SUITABLE MARKERS
DESIGNATING THIS PORTION OF HIGHWAY AS
"PURPLE HEART TRAIL ".
WHEREAS, General George Washington established the Purple Heart Medal on August
7, 1782 to honor military personnel wounded in combat; and
WHEREAS, the Board appreciates the members of the Armed Forces who have been
awarded the Purple Heart, and further recognizes that many have made the ultimate sacrifice to
keep our country free; and
WHEREAS, the Military Order of the Purple Heart of the USA is coordinating a state
and national effort to establish "The National Purple Heart Trail" consisting of major interstate
highways and roadways leading to patriotic sites; and
WHEREAS, on September 19, 2007 the Board adopted Resolution No. 311 -2007 in
support of dedicating U.S. Highway 27 in the State of Florida as the "Purple Heart Highway ";
and
WHEREAS, during the 2014 Florida legislative session, SB 820 was enacted, becoming
Ch. 2014 -228, Laws of Florida effective July 1, 2014, designating that portion of U.S. 1 /S.R. 5
between Card Sound Road in Miami -Dade County and C.R. 905 in Monroe County as "Purple
Heart Trail" (Sec. 46.); and
WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) requires a support
resolution from Monroe County requesting FDOT install and erect the roadway/bridge
designation signs; and
WHEREAS, our local community, our state, and our nation owe a deep debt of gratitude
to those members of our Armed Forces who have been wounded in combat and honored with the
Purple Heart medal and the Board desires to continue its support of the "Purple Heart Trail";

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners, of
Monroe County, Florida, that the Board:
Recommends and supports the designation of that portion of U.S. 1 /S.R. 5 between Card
Sound Road in Miami -Dade County, Florida and C.R. 905 in Monroe County, Florida
(known as the "18 -Mile Stretch ") in the State of Florida as "Purple Heart Trail".
2. Requests the Florida Department of Transportation install, erect and maintain suitable
markers designating this portion of highway as "Purple Heart Trail".
3. Directs the Clerk of the Court to forward a copy of this Resolution to: Neil Lyn,
Intermodal Systems Development Office, FDOT — District 6, Adam Leigh Building,
1000 N. W. I I Avenue, Room 6111 -A, Miami, FL 33172; Gus Pego, Secretary, FDOT
- District 6, 1000 N. W. 11` Avenue, Miami, FL 33172; Representative Holly Raschien,
99198 Overseas Highway, Suite 10, Key Largo, FL 33037 -2437;
the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Florida Chapter Commander James G. Holland,
III, 2985 Giverny Circle, Tallahassee, Florida 32303; and Governor Rick Scott.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County,
Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held on the 17` day of September, 2014.

RESOLUTION APPROVING THE STATE ROAD
CODESIGNATION OF U.S. USTATE ROAD 5 BETWEEN
CARD SOUND ROAD AND THE MONROE COUNTY LINE
AS "PURPLE HEART TRAIL"
WHEREAS, General George Washington established the Purple Heart Medal on August
7, 1782 to honor military personnel wounded in combat; and
WHEREAS, since then approximately 1.8 million Purple Heart medals have been
awarded to our military personnel; and
WHEREAS, this Board appreciates the members of the Armed Forces who have been
awarded the Purple Heart, and further recognizes that many have made the ultimate sacrifice to
keep our country free; and
WHEREAS, the Military Order of the Purple Heart of the U.S.A. is coordinating a state
and national effort to establish "The National Purple Heart Trail" consisting of major interstate
highways and roadways leading to patriotic sites; and
WHEREAS, our local community, our state, and our nation owe a deep debt of gratitude
to those members of our Armed Forces who have been wounded in combat and honored with the
Purple Heart Medal; and
WHEREAS, during the 2014 legislative session, Chapter 2014 -228, Laws of Florida
(Senate Bill 820), was enacted which, among other codesignations, codesignated U.S. 1 /State
Road 5 between Card Sound Road in Miami -Dade County and County Road 905 in Monroe
County as "Purple Heart Trail"; and

WHEREAS, section 334.071, Florida Statutes, provides that the installation of state road
designation signs shall be contingent on the applicable county or city commission passing a
resolution in support of the particular honorary road designation; and
WHEREAS, U.S. 1 /State Road 5 between Card Sound Road in Miami -Dade County and
County Road 905 in Monroe County is an 18 -mile stretch of state road beginning in Florida City
and running south through unincorporated Miami -Dade County before crossing the county line
and continuing into Monroe County; and
WHEREAS, before the Florida Department of Transportation will install signs reflecting
the "Purple Heart Trail' road codesignation, both Miami -Dade County and Monroe County are
required to pass a resolution in support of this road designation; and
WHEREAS, on September 17, 2014, the Monroe County Board of County
Commissioners adopted Resolution 221 -2014 in support of the "Purple Heart Trail' road
codesignation; and
WHEREAS, the portion of this state road codesignation located within Miami -Dade
County is located in County Commission District 9,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI -DADS COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section 1. Approves the state road codesignation of U.S. 1 /State Road 5 between
Card Sound Road and the Monroe County Line as "Purple Heart Trail'.

Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to send certified copies of this resolution to
the Mayor and County Commission of Monroe County, Florida, the Mayor and City
Commission of the City of Florida City, the Secretary of the Florida Department of
Transportation, the United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the
Public Works and Waste Management Department, the Development Services Division of the
Regulatory and Economic Resources Department, the Florida City Police Department, the
Miami -Dade Police Department and the Miami -Dade Fire Rescue Department.
The Prime Sponsor of the foregoing resolution is Commissioner Dennis C. Moss. It was
offered by Commissioner Lynda Bell , who moved its adoption. The motion was
seconded by Commissioner Xavier L. Suarez and upon being put to a vote, the vote was
as follows;

The Chairperson thereupon declared the resolution duly passed and adopted this 21" day
of October, 2014. This resolution shall become effective ten (10) days after the date of its
adoption unless vetoed by the Mayor, and if vetoed, shall become effective only upon an
override by this Board.
