Item H1County of Monroe A BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS Mayor George Neugent, District 2 The Florida. Key y w) Mayor Pro Tem David Rice, District 4 r Danny L. Kolhage, District 1 Heather Carruthers, District 3 Sylvia J. Murphy, District 5 County Commission Meeting January 18, 2017 Agenda Item Number: H.1 Agenda Item Summary #2489 BULK ITEM: No DEPARTMENT: Project Management / Facilities TIME APPROXIMATE: STAFF CONTACT: Tammy L. Sweeting (305) 292 -4526 10:00 A.M. AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Presentation regarding a Drowning Prevention Campaign sponsored by the Florida Department of Health in partnership with Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition and request for approval to post the drowning prevention signage at all Monroe County Beaches and utilize the assistance of Public Works staff in posting the signs, which are 12 by 16 inches, Aluminum Grade, and full color. ITEM BACKGROUND: Monroe County has higher drowning rates than many other counties in the state, per attached Florida Charts, and Project Management /Facilities recommends we partner with the Florida Department of Health to promote this campaign. Some Florida county beaches have Beach Health Advisory signs as part of their Healthy Beaches program. Bob Vincent, who leads the Healthy Beaches program in Tallahassee, says these signs are approved to post adjacent to a Beach Health Advisory sign, if needed. We understand that most drowning deaths occur in residential homes, however, we believe that the signage at public beaches can increase awareness on drowning prevention and at no cost to the County for the signage.
