AGENDA ITEM WORDING:
Discussion of a request from Keys Energy Services to waive or
have the County pay permit fees for those county residents who will be required to relocate their
electrical service due to the elimination of certain easements.
ITEM BACKGROUND:
Keys Energy Services (KES) is being required to eliminate certain
easements in order to improve accessibility and harden the overall electrical grid. In Monroe
County, KES will be installing 114 new poles along the streets and removing the same from the
rear. The project will commence in March 2017. The relocation of poles will last about a year. The
transfers will occur over two to three years (including customer transfers and work by AT&T and
Comcast). Those 114 poles will impact 120 meters, which will need to be relocated. Each meter
will require the homeowner to seek an electrician to complete the work, which will require County
permits. The permits are estimated at about $200 per location, so the total value of the permits are
an estimated $24,000. The Utility Board has approved offering homeowners a rebate of actual costs
up to $2,100 and has budgeted $250,000 over the next four years.
